The insect repellent collar from Equi7 and AB7 Industries Veterinaires in France uses natural plant extracts that have known insect repellent properties.
Key ingredients are Lavandin (Lavandin plants produce around half as much again more oil than lavender plants) and Geraniol which consitutes the primary part of rose oil, palmarosa oil, and citronella oil. It also occurs in small quantities in geranium, lemon, and many other essential oils.
Among the other natural ingredients are
L-alpha pinene: found in the oils of many species of many coniferous trees, notably the pine.
Terpinolene: found in allspice and is a constituent of many essential oils.
Limonene: found in high levels in lemons and possesses a strong smell of citrus.
Eucalyptol: is a natural constituent of a number of aromatic plants
Menthone: is a constituent of the essential oils of wild mint, Mentha arvensis, Pelargonium geraniums and others
These materials protect horses against most biting and nuisance insects including flies, midges, mosquitos and horseflies. Lasting between 3 and 5 weeks (depending on the weather), the active ingredient protects the horse to provide comfort and relief.
The collar is easy to place around the horse’s neck. After a few hours the active ingredients are released from the collar onto the horse and migrate to cover the epidermis. It will not provide full body protection but will help to deter many flies that would otherwise land and annoy the horse. The collar is effective for 3 to 5 weeks depending on climatic conditions and so eliminates the need to use sprays that would require constant reapplication and remains effective when the horse is wet or perspires.
Available in one size (106cm) to fit most horses, ponies and donkeys. Any excess can be cut away.
The collar is approved for use in the UK on animals (HSE8847). and is classed as a biocide (product type) PT19.
